Today marks the first day of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Otherwise known as “Extreme Surfing” season to some people.<\/p>

While the thought of large waves, and heavy winds stirring up the salty air seems exciting and fun, the dangers still exist.<\/p>

Luckily, however, weather experts are predicting that this hurricane season, although above-average, will not produce some of the record-breaking storms that we saw during 2020.<\/p>

This year, the NOAA predicts around 13 to 20 named storms of which between 6 and 10 of them will reach hurricane strengths and 3 to 5 would become category 3 or higher hurricanes.<\/p>

Although June 1st marks the first day of the 2021 season, the first actual tropical storm, Ana, formed earlier last month near Bermuda.<\/p>

Tips To Stay Safe This Hurricane Season<\/h2>

We hope to help you and your family stay safe while continuing to have fun at the beach or on the water. Therefore, we put together a list of tips to help you stay safe.<\/p>

Stay Informed & Monitor Storms<\/h3>

The number one piece of advice we could offer is to stay informed and keep up with local and national weather news. Be sure to check your local news stations, newspapers, and news websites. <\/p>

The National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service are also the best ones to keep track of by visiting their websites or following them on social media as they post all alerts and advisories. In most locations, you can also sign up for text alerts.<\/p>

Keep a tracking map throughout the hurricane season to keep track of where any tropical storms or hurricanes are headed.<\/p>

Watch the Weather<\/h3>

Although keeping up with the local news and other weather stations is a great starting point, sometimes the weather can change within minutes without notice. Keep an eye out on the weather for any sudden changes such as a sudden increase or halt in wind speeds. The old saying “the calm before the storm” is a good guide to follow as normally before a storm, the weather will come to an abrupt halt.<\/p>

Keeping an eye on the waves and the weather can give you enough of a notice to get to safety in time.<\/p>

Travel Insurance<\/h3>

If you plan on traveling for vacation during the hurricane season, especially to areas in hurricane zones, it is highly recommended to get travel insurance before traveling.<\/p>

Travel insurance is one of those after-thoughts that most vacationers don’t think about until it is too late.<\/p>

With travel insurance, you can insure the cost of your trip in case anything such as a hurricane or any other weather event, natural disaster, or other event happens that is beyond your control causing your trip to be canceled.<\/p>

Having travel insurance will allow you to be reimbursed for the costs of pre-paid hotels, flights, car rentals, and other travel related expenses that you would not be able to use due to the cancellation.<\/p>

In most hurricane zone destinations, you will be unable to get travel insurance once a storm has been named. Therefore, it is important to make your plans ahead of time and remember the insurance.<\/p>

Travel with a Partner<\/h3>

Whether you are traveling out of town or are just a local that loves to hang out at the beach or on the water, it is highly recommended to always bring someone with you.<\/p>

Being alone near the water when a sudden storm hits can prove to be fatal without having someone there to help you or at least run to seek help.<\/p>

Strong gusts of winds or large waves have been known to sweep even the most skilled sailors out to sea just as rip currents and waves have claimed many skilled swimmers and surfers.<\/p>

Having a friend or family member with you not only gives you someone to enjoy the day with, but also ensures that in the event of any incident, you have a second set of hands and eyes to help.<\/p>

Check the Hurricane Plan for the Park or Beach<\/h3>

When traveling to beaches or parks in a hurricane zone, it is always best to first check the park or beach’s hurricane plan as soon as you arrive.<\/p>

Most places have a plan posted on signs near the entrance and show important information such as exit routes, emergency services information, and other useful tips.<\/p>

Knowing this ahead of time can be a real life-saver if the time comes.<\/p>

Beware of Rip Currents<\/h3>
\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>

Surfers and swimmers should always beware of rip currents throughout the year and not just during hurricane season, although they are more prevalent during storms.<\/p>

Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that move at speeds of up to 8 feet per second.<\/p>

An estimated 100 people die each year from rip currents and tens of thousands of others are saved by lifeguards.<\/p>

Swimmers commonly panic when caught in a rip current and instinctively attempt to swim straight to shore, however, due to the strength and speed of the current, this causes fatigue which can lead to drowing.<\/p>

If you are caught in a rip current, you should never fight it. Always swim parallel to the shore and swim back to land at an angle.<\/p>

Beware of Coastal Flooding<\/h3>
\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>

Coastal flooding is caused by low-pressure systems in the Gulf of Mexico and can affect the coast even when the systems occur hundreds of miles off the coast.<\/p>

The flooding, which can happen in a short time period, can sometimes reach up to the beach sand dunes cutting off access to the shorline.<\/p>

Beware of where you park your vehicle or set up your gear to be sure that you are not left stranded in standing water.<\/p>

Be Patient after a storm<\/h3>
\"\"<\/a><\/figure>

Beaches and parks sometimes close even if a storm has not passed through the area.<\/p>

Officials may close down the park or beach in order to send their workers to other areas to help clean up after a storm or in anticipation of a possible storm event.<\/p>

If a park or beach is closed, do not go out on the beach or in the park as there will be nobody around in case of an emergency.<\/p>

Most of the time parks are closed for the safety of its visitors. It is best to trust the closures.<\/p>

Lookout for Debris<\/h3>

Debris from storms can travel many miles either by water or high winds. If a storm has been through your area or an area nearby, you should beware of possible debris.<\/p>

Debris such as broken glass, metal shrapnel, and other sharp and jagged objects can be hidden under the sand or in the water and can cause great harm or death.<\/p>

In most cases, the beaches and parks will be closed for cleaning if debris is found, however, it is best to proceed with caution if you do find one that is open shortly after a storm.<\/p>

One of the best practices you can always have is just being generally prepared.<\/p>

Safety preparation is something you should always practice during any outdoor event.<\/p>

Nature, while beautiful, can be cruel and unforgiving. Always be sure to be prepared with essentials and necessities.<\/p>

Keeping a safety bag handy is a great way to practice safety preparation.<\/p>
