LEESBURG – For many local residents, the high cost of veterinary services is a huge problem. A single illness or injury to a family pet can cost sometimes hundreds even thousands of dollars. Even routine spaying or neutering can cost well over $200. For many families that results in unspayed or neutered pets adding to the already problematic pet population, or the painful decision to have to put down a family pet that could be saved.
Fortunately for the Leesburg area, a new low-cost clinic, The Animal League Wellness Center, will open its doors across from the VIAport Mall, at 32721 Radio Road next week. The new clinic will celebrate its grand opening from noon to 4 p.m. on Sept. 10 with an open house event, refreshments, and tours. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 1 p.m.
According to organizers, the clinic is an extension of the South Lake Animal League Shelter in Groveland, which has served the area since 1998, and will provide low-cost wellness checks, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, flea and tick control, heartworm medicines and micro-chipping. The shelter will also offer spay and neuter service to local animal shelters.
The clinic will employ a staff veterinarian on a part-time basis until October when a full-time vet will arrive to handle check-ups and surgeries. Two nurses are in place on a volunteer basis to help with post-op services.
