LEESBURG – Fruitland Park Police and Lake County Deputies responded to a call at the Leesburg WalMart Monday night around 7:15 in reference to a shooting. Officials arrived on scene to find a middle aged white male who had been shot in the parking lot.
According to Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, officers provided medical aid to the victim but were unsuccessful. The victim passed away from a gunshot wound at the scene.
Witnesses reported that a late-model red Toyota Camry with at least two occupants opened fire in the WalMart parking lot fatally injuring the victim. Lt. Herrell was unable to provide a physical description of the suspects, however, advised that the suspects fled the scene from the south exit on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Detectives investigating the scene believe the shooting may have been drug-related after finding drugs on the scene. Detectives have not released the identity of the victim pending notification of next-of-kin.
Detectives are reviewing WalMart surveillance videos and following leads provided by witnesses. LCSO officials were unable to provide any further information at this time.
