FRUITLAND PARK – A Fruitland Park family lost their home Thursday night when it went up in flames.
According to witnesses, the family that lived in the home was able to safely make it out of the home along with their pets.
The flames started at the home located at 4137 Picciola Road on the county side of Fruitland Park around 7 pm. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
Flames reached over 50 feet high and firefighters from Lake County Fire Rescue, The Villages Fire Rescue, and Leesburg Fire Rescue worked to get the flames under control.
Traffic was blocked off from Mulholland Drive on Picciola Road as Fruitland Park Police redirected vehicles around the Lake Unity Road and Picciola Road intersection where the house sits.
Although most of the home was burned during the fire, firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring homes.
A neighbor who lives directly behind the home on Mulholland Drive stated that they were away from home when they received a text telling them their neighbor’s home was burning. The neighbor stated that the fire did not affect their home which sits about 100 feet from where the fire was but the inside of their home was very hot from the heat coming from the fire.
