Man Charged with Murder in Connection with WalMart Shooting

LEESBURG – A man who was apprehended by Lake County Deputies Thursday was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Mark Allen Estes.

Estes was found with a gunshot wound in the WalMart parking lot in Leesburg on Monday night after police received numerous 911 calls.

According to arrest reports, police found Estes’s cell phone in his vehicle containing text messages from a Sprint phone number agreeing to meet up with Thomas to make a “purchase”.

The report also states that WalMart Video surveillance shows Estes enter WalMart to use the restroom then exit and wait in his 2011 Cadillac until a 2011 red Toyota pulled up next to Estes at 7:13 pm. The video then shows the Toyota pull out of the parking space at 7:14 pm and open fire on Estes leaving him lying on the ground. The suspects then fled the scene through the south exit of the WalMart parking lot.

Detectives were able to trace the Sprint phone number back to 24-year-old Scott Bernard Thomas. On September 22, detectives responded to a location where one witness said they could find Thomas and gave numerous commands for Thomas to come out of the apartment. When Thomas refused, a K-9 was released to detain Thomas.

Thomas was arrested and charged with resisting an officer without violence, violation of probation, and third-degree murder.

He is being held at the Lake County Jail without bond until his arraignment on October 17th at 8:30 am.

According to officials, more arrests may follow in connection to Estes’s death. Check back here for updates soon.
