A local church, an American Idol star, and Renninger’s Antique and Flea Market have teamed up to undertake the pursuit of a Guinness World Record for the “World’s Biggest Potluck Supper” as a way to help feed the hungry in Lake County.
The Cross Mount Dora announced this week that they will be sponsoring the quest for the World’s Largest Potluck to be held at Renninger’s on November 12th. The Lutheran Church on Route 441 in Mount Dora has joined forces with American Idol contestant and local musician, David Oliver Willis, to break the record by assembling a minimum of 2,000 people in the field at Renninger’s Antique and Flea Market, also a co-sponsor of the event.
Associate Pastor Jacob Baumann told CFLwire, “The goal is to raise $50,000 for Lake Cares, a great organization that helps feed hungry families and kids in Lake County.” Baumann added that the church’s Senior Pastor is passionate about helping the community in creative ways. “Pastor Zach Zehnder really thinks outside the box. This is not our first world record. A few years ago Pastor Zehnder broke the Guinness record for the World’s Longest Speech. He preached fo
r over 53 hours straight- the whole Bible was covered! The record raised a lot of money for his Power House Drug and Alcohol Program.”
In 2014, Pastor Zehnder made a wisecrack during a sermon saying he’d pay for anyone who wanted to get a tattoo of the church’s logo. When seven people took him up on the offer, Zehnder made good on his promise. The story made news nationwide.
Baumann said, “So far the response has been good. We have raised about $20,000 and we are hoping to hit our goal of $50,000.”
Everyone is asked to bring a dish or beverage to feed at least six people. Admission is free to the public. Funds are being raised by corporate sponsorships, and there’s plenty of room for local businesses to get involved. David Oliver Willis will be performing live at the event.
