FRUITLAND PARK – For many that knew Steve Fussell he was a caring, friendly, and generous member of the Fruitland Park community.
Fussell passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
Most people knew Steve from his restaurant, Fruitland Park Cafe, owned by him and his wife, Niki. Customers would come and enjoy friendly conversations with him at his restaurant while also enjoying the familial atmosphere.
Others knew Steve by his work in the Fruitland Park community with his news website, Fruitland Park News. Steve was a dedicated and passionate writer covering many stories in the Fruitland Park area for his website as well as for the Daily Commercial as a correspondent.
Fussell graduated from Bishop Moore High and attended college at Florida State Universtiy.
He dedicated most of his life helping other people from the time he was young starting out as a social worker for runaways.
Although he considered himself a Florida native, Steve was born in Alabama and was the oldest of five brothers.
Over the past year, Steve was battling an unknown cancer that went misdiagnosed until it was too late. The cancer started in his lung and spread to his spine, fracturing his C5 cervical vertebrae according to family members.
