FRUITLAND PARK – One man is dead after an incident that occurred on Picciola Road in Fruitland Park according to deputies.
Lake County deputies responded to a hit-and-run call near Fruitland Discount Beverage, a gas station commonly referred to as JR’s by locals.
When deputies arrived, witnesses stated that a vehicle crashed into the store and then into another vehicle.
The suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Wayne Donald Dorsey, reportedly attempted to carjack another vehicle at the gas station after crashing his vehicle.
Deputies chased Dorsey on foot once they arrived at the scene.
Dorsey led deputies into a nearby lake where he climbed into a boat with a couple of occupants.
One deputy used his taser gun against Dorsey but stated that the electric round had no effect on him.
The report stated that Dorsey became erratic and grabbed an oar from the boat and began motioning toward the deputy in an aggressive manner at which time the deputy fired at Dorsey with his issued sidearm.
Dorsey was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after by EMS personnel.
Officials from the Federal Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrived to investigate the shooting as part of standard procedure in all law enforcement involved shootings.
The deputy involved in the shooting, who has not been identified, was placed on a paid suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.
