Lake Panasofkee – Sumter County’s Humane Society/SPCA will be hosting a special dual celebratory event April 22 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m at their shelter in Lake Panasofkee. This event marks the organization’s 35th year proudly serving Sumter County’s animals in need. They will also be celebrating Earth Day with “green” activities at the same event.
“Green” activities will include meeting local wildlife rehabilitation specialists and animals, free educational information about Florida native plant and animal life, and much more. Native plants, food, music, shelter tours, and demonstrations will help provide visitors with ways to enrich the community.
This special event will also play host to many recycling opportunities, such as the Book Swap. For this event, visitors are encouraged to bring any book emphasizing the themes of animals, nature, and travel to donate. Visitors will have the opportunity to receive free books in return. Other book topics are also welcomed, but keeping with the main theme of the event is preferred. Visitors who do not bring a book but would like to receive one may make a donation in exchange.
There will be many more items available in a yard sale. Items remaining after the event will be donated to local thrift shops.
Visitors wishing to recycle their unwanted pet items, such as leashes, litter boxes, and harnesses, may bring them on Earth Day and receive a tax receipt immediately. Other recyclable items such as aluminum cans, used ink cartridges, and old cell phones may be brought in as well to help promote the Humane Society/SPCA’s fundraising and recycling efforts.
