LEESBURG – Saturday morning was a morning of fun, sun, and sports during the 22nd annual Junior Athletic Games (J.A.G.) put on by the Leesburg Police Department at Leesburg High School.
The games first began in 1995 as the brainchild of Leesburg Police Department’s school resource officers and continues each year.
To prepare for the event, coaches from Leesburg, Fruitland Park, The Villages, Treadway, and Beverly Shores Elementary schools hand selected several students to participate in the competition.
Students were chosen to represent their school in games such as the Long Jump, Soccer Kick, Softball Throw, Football Throw, 50 Yard Dash, 100 Yard Dash, the Half Mile Run, and the School Spirit Relay.
Students competed against their peers to earn first, second, and third place medals in each event as well as a trophy for the school with the most overall placements.
This year, Fruitland Park Elementary had the honor of walking away with the Overall Wins trophy as well as the first place trophy for the School Spirit Relay.
The Junior Athletic Games is an event presented each year using funds collected through donations and sponsorships from businesses. Off-Duty police officers donated their time to volunteer to help bring this event together.
“More than 400 students participate from our local elementary schools,” said Leesburg Police Sgt. Kim Stewart. “We are the only police department that does something like this.”
Stewart stated that the event plays a major role in community outreach between police officers and children to teach kids that cops are not bad.
