TAVARES—The Lake County Public Safety Department’s Emergency Management Division is inviting volunteers to help their fellow citizens during a crisis by signing up to “Adopt an Emergency Shelter.”
The program offers an opportunity for civic, non-profit, faith-based, private or community organizations, and individuals to become involved in assisting the county’s nine primary and 19 secondary emergency shelters during times of disaster.
“This program provides much-needed support for shelters during all types of disasters, but most commonly during weather emergencies when people are displaced from their homes due to hurricanes, or flooding,” said Tommy Carpenter, manager of Lake County’s Emergency Management Division. “By volunteering, residents can make a significant impact in their community by offering a helping hand to these residents during a vulnerable and difficult point in their lives.”
Volunteers will have the opportunity to register residents, provide necessary information, help manage meals and assistance with pets as all shelters are pet-friendly.
Emergency Management staff will offer a one-day training for all volunteers wishing to assist in shelter operations. After applicants have passed a county background check, they will be asked to agree to a one-year commitment. Volunteers will only be called upon if a shelter is opened during an emergency.
