EUSTIS, Fla. – On Wednesday, prosecutors decided not to try one suspect and made a plea deal with another in an armed robbery case from last year in which they tried to rob the victim of his medication.
But the two suspects, Nikko Brown, 20, and Devante Allen, 24, still face murder charges in a separate shooting death.
In the plea deals made at the Lake County courthouse, according to the Clerk of Court, Allen was given one year, time already served and Brown will not be prosecuted.
A third suspect in the armed robbery, Cordell Allen, 24, was given 18 months in prison during his plea deal.
Brown and Devante Allen’s murder trials were supposed to be this week, but were continued to October due to a difficult time in talking with witnesses, said Hugh Bass, assistant state attorney.
According to Eustis police reports, Nicholas Bolden told officers on April 8 of last year that he got into the back seat of a Chevrolet Impala with Cordell Allen to sell him some cough syrup, Xanax, and Adderall pills.
Police said the promethazine syrup, typically mixed with alcohol and ingested, has a street name of “slide.”
Allen, along with the driver and front-seat passenger, all pulled guns on Bolden and demanded his drugs, police said. Bolden jumped out of the car and Cordell Allen threatened to shoot him. However, the gunmen then drove away after realizing residents of a nearby home were standing outside and watching.
Bolden later was able to contact police again the identity of the two men in the front seat – Nikko Brown and Devante Allen – after noticing on Facebook they were wanted in the murder of Khamori Williams from April 28 of that year.
Williams died after being shot in the stomach after his car crashed on Pine Avenue that day. Witnesses identified the two men as the suspects shooting at the car and Brown and Devante Allen were eventually charged with murder.
Bass said earlier there had been some dispute between them.
