LEESBURG — Leesburg Police officers are seeking a suspect who is believed to be responsible for an early morning shooting that occurred at the Family Discount Mart located at 2201 Griffin Road in Leesburg just before 8 a.m. Friday morning.
According to a statement released by Leesburg Police Major Steve Rockefeller, officers responded to the location after receiving a 911 call reporting that someone had been shot.
Upon arrival, police were flagged down by the victim who had been shot several times. The victim was then transported by EMS to a local trauma center.
According to their investigation, police learned that the altercation began when two individuals began arguing in the parking lot of the convenience store. During the altercation, one of the individuals shot the victim several times and then fled the area on foot.
The victim then got into his vehicle and fled the area as well and then flagged down officers as they were en route to the scene.
Due to the suspect fleeing the area, schools in the area where placed on a short lockdown while police investigated the scene.
Detectives believe the person responsible for the shooting is 37-year-old Shane Justin Atterbury and have issued a warrant for his arrest for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed firearm. Other charges are pending upon the outcome of the investigation.
Atterbury is described as a 5’9″ black male weighing 155 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, a medium complexion and has several tattoos including one on his left wrist that says “Shane Jr”, a cross tattoo on his upper back, and a tattoo on his right wrist that says “Shanejha”.
Atterbury’s last known address was at 2000 Park Circle 64 in Leesburg.
