MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Late in the evening on September 21, at 8:40 p.m., 25-year-old David A. Waller left his home for a bicycle ride. His route on County Rd 25A contained no street lights and left him invisible to driver John C. Vance and passenger Lester L. Vance.
Waller was riding in the travel lane off of the highway, which left Vance in shock as Waller suddenly came into sight.
Moments before impact, John was able to quickly swerve his Dodge truck in an attempt to avoid a collision, but a portion of his car collided with Waller.
Waller was struck by the vehicle and thrown onto the shoulder of the highway.
Though Vance drove off the road and into a mailbox, he and his passenger did not experience any injuries.
Waller was pronounced dead moments after the Marion County Fire Department arrived on the scene.
The possibility of alcohol consumption by the victim has not been ruled out as this currently remains pending.
