LEESBURG – An accident at the intersection of US Highway 27 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard caused traffic to back up for a short while at the corner of the Leesburg WalMart Sunday afternoon.
According to witnesses, a black KIA minivan was in the northbound turning lane of US Highway 27 attempting to turn onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. during a caution light when the minivan was struck by a Champion Rentals cargo van that was headed southbound on US Hwy 27.
The driver of the minivan reportedly told officers “I thought I could beat him across,” according to witnesses.
The Champion Rentals van struck the minivan in the rear passenger side causing the minivan to come to a stop blocking the intersection of US Hwy 27 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Lake County firefighters and Leesburg Police worked quickly to clear the scene and allow traffic to return to normal.
According to reports, all passengers of both vehicles only suffered minor injuries and were transported to local medical centers.
At this time it is unclear how many people were involved in the accident or if charges are pending.
