WILDWOOD – A 70-year-old man accused of pulling out a shot gun on his girlfriend and refusing to allow her to leave was taken into custody Sunday after a four-hour stand-off with Sumter County deputies.
Wesley Munrow Berry, of Wildwood, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery and false imprisonment.
He remained in the Sumter County jail early Monday afternoon without bail.
According to an arrest affidavit, the woman said she was at Berry’s County Road 505 home in Wildwood with him Sunday morning when Berry, who was drinking, became suspicious that she had another boyfriend.
Berry reportedly got angry and began to hit and slap her before he locked her inside the bedroom and refused to allow her to leave.
At some point she escaped into the home’s living area, informed other people in the home that he struck her and to call the police.
But the other people ran out the home and Berry reportedly grabbed the woman by the back of her head and dragged her back into the bedroom.
The affidavit adds the woman told sheriff’s deputies Berry then grabbed a shot gun, began to load it and pointed it towards the floor and wall, but told her “all he had to do was pull the trigger.”
The woman added at one point he placed the gun under his own chin.
Deputies arrive and said they saw him holding her back, but she eventually ran to deputies.
After a 4-hour stand-off, Berry reportedly surrendered to deputies and was arrested.
