LEESBURG – Jose Omar Azua, the man who is being charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death is scheduled for a sentencing hearing in November.
Azua was arrested after he turned himself in admitting to Leesburg Police officers that he was the one driving when his vehicle struck a motorcycle at a stop light resulting in the death of 54-year-old Lori Dudley.
When the accident occurred, Azua fled the scene but shortly returned while police were investigating. Police questioned Azua at which time he told officers he was not driving. Officers were unable to arrest him at the time since there were no witnesses that could place Azua behind the wheel of the vehicle.
According to details in the police report on the night of the incident, Azua was possibly intoxicated, however, police were unable to get any evidence since Azua refused to complete any testing.
Azua turned himself in two days after the accident and admitted to police that he was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
A memorial service was held for Dudley where family, friends, and strangers came together to show support for the Dudley family.
Azua was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident involving a death and with vehicular manslaughter and was scheduled to appear in court in September. That hearing was continued until October at which time a sentencing hearing was scheduled.
Azua is scheduled to be sentenced on both charges at the Lake County Judicial Center in Tavares on November 11th at 9:00 am.
