Belleview Man Killed in Collision with Semi

CITRA – A Belleview man was pronounced dead after his vehicle collided with a semi-truck on US Highway 301 at approximately 3:15 am Sunday morning according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

The man, identified as 56-year-old Jerry D. Likens was traveling in northbound on the shoulder of the southbound lane of US 301 according to the report.

As Likens approached the intersection of US 301 and NE 155th Street Road, he entered the southbound lane traveling north into the direct path of a 1999 Kenworth semi-truck driven by 33-year-old Mario Alvarez.

Alvares attempted to swerve out of Likens’s path but was unable to do so in time.

Likens struck the front right side of the semi causing his vehicle to spin across the median coming to a stop in the northbound lanes.

Marion County Fire Rescue pronounced Likens deceased at the scene and Alvarez was treated for minor injuries.

It is unclear why Likens was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes at this time.

A portion of US 301 was shut down for several ours as troopers investigated the scene.

Troopers are still waiting on results of blood tests to determine if alcohol was involved.
