LEESBURG – According to Leesburg Police, a child was pronounced dead Tuesday morning shortly after 10:30 am after a collision on US 441 in front of Gator Harley.
Witnesses state that a Ford Taurus was traveling on Fern Drive toward US 441 when the driver crossed the southbound lanes and struck the Ford Explorer which was traveling northbound on US 441 causing the SUV to overturn at least once or twice. The child was ejected from the SUV during the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries.
The driver of the Ford Taurus was the only occupant and was not injured. There were eight passengers in the Explorer. Three passengers were airlifted to local trauma care centers while the others were transported to local medical centers.
The names of the injured and the age of the child are not being released pending notification of family.
Leesburg Police officers and Leesburg Fire Rescue along with an LPD Homicide Investigator are still on the scene investigating. According to Lt. Joe Iozzi of the Leesburg Police, charges are pending although he was not able to say who was at fault at this time.
This investigation is ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.
