Clermont Home Invasion Suspects Arrested After One Dies

CLERMONT, Fla. — Officials have identified the 22-year-old suspect shot by a tenant during an armed home invasion Sunday morning.

Aswad Emmanuel Velazquez of Sanford died at Celebration Hospital in Kissimmee, shortly after he was taken there by his three co-suspects, said Sgt. Fred Jones on Monday, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Isiah Velazquez, 19, who is Aswad Velazquez’s brother, as well as Tareak Ilarreza, 18, and Lawrence Omar Alexis, 22, all from Sanford, were detained at the hospital.

The three remaining suspects were charged with burglary to a structure while armed as well as second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Officials were able to charge the remaining suspects with murder in the death of Aswad Velazquez, due to a law that allows those to be charged if their co-suspects are shot during a felony.

Jones added that Lawrence also was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly shot at one of the neighbor’s doors.

All were being held Monday without bail in the Osceola County jail.

Deputies responded to the shooting just before 3 a.m. Sunday at Raintree Apartments on Raintree Bend in Clermont, where they discovered a pool of blood at the door, a trail of blood leading to the side of the apartment building and bullet shells sprawled inside the apartment.

According to the incident report and charging affidavit, tenant Luis Robles-Carmona, told deputies he heard a knock, saw an unknown man and answered the door with his gun due to the late night hour.

Carmona added the suspect, later identified as Aswad Velazquez, then attempted to enter his home and fired a shot at him that whizzed past his head.

Carmona then fired back in self-defense, hitting Aswad Velazquez and causing the suspect to fall to the ground. Carmona said when Aswad Velazquez attempted to get back up and resume shooting, he fired more bullets at the suspect.

Carmona added he then closed the door as bullets were sprayed through the door.

Carmona said he eventually spotted Alexis dragging the body of Aswad Velazquez and when a neighbor opened her door to investigate, Alexis shot at her.
