Dump truck crash closes stretch of I-75 in Sumter

WILDWOOD, Fla. – A stretch of Interstate 75 remained closed Wednesday after a dump truck – with its bed raised — struck an overpass earlier in the morning.

The crash occurred just after 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes of 75 in Wildwood, at the County Road 514 overpass.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Robert Givens, 60, of Wildwood, was heading north with the bed raised, which struck the overpass. Givens was flown to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

The crash had closed about an 18-mile stretch of the 75 surrounding the crash site as inspectors evaluate the damage and safety needs. Traffic is being diverted at Exit 321 in Lake Panasoffkee.

C.R. 514 is also closed while inspectors determine the structural integrity of that roadway, Gaskins added in the report.
