LEESBURG – A man is behind bars after falling asleep at a gas pump with his children in the car according to arrest reports.
Leesburg Police responded to the BP station on N 14th Street after receiving a call that a gray Honda was parked at one of their gas pumps with a driver sleeping behind the wheel while the vehicle was running. The caller also told police that there appeared to be small children in the back seat.
Officers arrived and attempted to wake the driver by tapping on his window but the driver was unresponsive. It wasn’t until the driver’s cell phone rang moments later that he woke up.
Officer Tyce spoke with the driver, identified as 29-year-old Patrick Quinton Williams, who seemed incoherent. Williams handed the officer his debit card when asked for his license and smelled of alcohol according to the report. Officer Tyce also stated that there was a visible open container of Redd’s Wicked Mango Hard Ale in the center console.
When asked if he knew where he was, Williams stated that he was in Eustis. Willams also reportedly told officers he thought the children were dropped off and forgot that they were still with him.
Williams was then instructed to undergo a field sobriety test which he failed.
He was transported to the Lake County Jail for further testing, however, once there, Williams refused to take a blood-alcohol test.
Williams was booked at the Lake County Jail for Driving Under the Influence and child neglect. He also was issued a citation for having an open container in the vehicle.
Williams is currently being held at the Lake County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 12th at 8:30 am.
