Extension offers January classes focused around healthy food preparation

TAVARES — The University of FLORIDA’S Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is inviting residents to the following educational classes in January:

  • Healthy Cooking for 1 or 2 at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Lady Lake Public Library, 225 W. Guava St., Lady Lake. Participants will learn how to downsize and simplify meal preparation without sacrificing flavor.   • Keeping the Pressure Down Series (Classes 1 and 2 in a four-part series) at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 and Thursday, Jan. 26 at Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. For those who have high blood pressure, this series offers steps to help reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Next month’s classes will be held Feb. 2 and Feb. 9. Registration for the $25 series is available at https://lakekpd.eventbrite.com or by calling 352-343-4101 ext. 2721.
  • Saturday in the Gardens: Cultivate and Create with Herbs at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Lake County Extension Center. Learn cultivation tips and creative ways to use herbs in the kitchen, home and garden from agents Brooke Moffis and Mia Wilchombe. Pre-registration for the class is required online at http://bit.ly/2i3Hasn for $5 or by cash or check at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours. Discovery Gardens, a 3.5 acre property consisting of multiple themed gardens, is free to tour.

Those with food allergies should be aware that food items prepared or distributed as part of UF/IFAS Extension events may contain milk, egg, gluten, wheat, soybean, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish; and could be prepared in a facility that may be exposed to any of these ingredients.

The mission of the UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County is to develop knowledge in agricultural, human and natural resources and to make that knowledge accessible to sustain and enhance the quality of human life. The Extension service provides free consultations, as well as educational programs on a variety of subjects.
