Extension Office Offers Programs About Bees, Fall Cooking, Landscaping and more in October

TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is offering an array of educational and entertaining programs in October, including the ever-popular Master Gardeners Plant Sale, where Florida-friendly blooms can be purchased at the very best prices. Check out all of the Extension’s diverse offerings:

  • 4-H Clover Campaign is Oct. 4 -15 at Tractor Supply Company stores in Eustis, Groveland, and Leesburg. Shoppers will have the opportunity to support 4-H in Lake County by purchasing paper clovers for $1 at checkout. Funds raised through this local campaign will be donated to 4-H and will support local camps, after-school programs, and other 4-H youth development activities.   • Lake County Master Gardeners Plant Sale from 8 a.m. – noon on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Lake County Extension Center,1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Shop more than 3,000 Florida-friendly plants including annuals, perennials, herbs, natives, shrubs, and tropicals.
  • Poison in the Pasture from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Learn to identify poisonous plants common to Central Florida, develop a plan to prevent weeds, and understand how to control weed problems in your pasture. Registration is $10 and includes printed material and a color poster of poisonous plants. https://ufpoisonpasture.eventbrite.com.
  • Homeowner Education Landscape Program (HELP) three-part series from 9 a.m. – noon on Oct. 13, 20 and 27 at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Participants are required to attend all three classes, which will address frequently asked questions and problems in the home landscape.  The class will include classroom and hands-on training, micro-irrigation supplies, and a Plant Selection and Landscape Design Guide.   • Sweet as Can Bee from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Learn how commercial beekeepers produce honey and beeswax while providing a valuable service to other farmers. Explore easy ways to incorporate honey as a natural sweetener in your favorite recipes. Registration is $10 and includes printed material, recipes and food samples, and is available online at https://UFRootsUP.eventbrite.com.
  • Florida Fall Flavors from 10-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Cooper Memorial Library, 2525 Oakley Seaver Drive, Clermont.  Learn ways to incorporate Florida fall flavors at meal time directly with foods from the home garden or local farms. This class will discuss nutritional content, where to purchase locally, and how to make fall produce part of a healthful diet.   • Small Acreage Pasture Management from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Managing smaller acreage (less than 30 acres) can be a challenge. In this class, learn how to maximize stocking rate, prevent weeds and soil erosion, develop a robust fertilizer program, and select the right plants for your operation.   • Keeping the Pressure Down, 4-part series from 10 a.m. – noon on Oct. 25Nov. 1, 8 and 15, at the Lady Lake Public Library, 225 W. Guava St., Lady Lake. For those who have high blood pressure, this series offers steps to help reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Registration is $15 at https://fcslake.eventbrite.com.
  • Healthy Cooking for 1 or 2 from 10 a.m. – noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Participants will learn how to downsize and simplify meal preparation without sacrificing flavor. The $10 registration fee, which includes food, printed material, and recipes, is required before Oct. 27 online at https://fcslake.eventbrite.com.

Those with food allergies should be aware that food items prepared or distributed as part of UF/IFAS Extension events may contain milk, egg, gluten, wheat, soybean, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish; and could be prepared in a facility that may be exposed to any of these ingredients.
