ALTOONA, Fla. – One person was killed and three Lake County firefighters were taken to the hospital after a vehicle veered into the path of a fire truck Friday morning in the Altoona area.
The crash occurred at the intersection of county roads 439 and 42 about 11:45 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said A Nissan was traveling westbound on CR-42, when it left the roadway, overcorrected and traveled into the path of the Lake County Fire-Rescue truck that was traveling eastbound.
The fire truck, which was not responding to a call, “attempted to take evasive action,” but struck the left side of the Nissan.
The female driver of the Nissan died on scene and male passenger was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Montes added the driver of the fire truck as well as two fire fighters were taken to Florida Hospital Waterman with minor injuries.
The crash remained under investigation Friday afternoon and more details are expected to be released later.
