COLEMAN — Former United States Representative Corrine Brown (Dem.) was jailed at the Coleman Federal Prison on Monday to begin serving her 5-year sentence on various charges including federal corruption and fraud that she was convicted of committing during her time in office.
Brown served as a U.S. Representative in Florida from 1993 to 2013 for the 3rd Florida District and from 2013 to 2017 for the 5th Florida District before she was charged with 22 felony criminal charges alongside her chief of staff Elias “Ronnie” Simmons.
Of those charges, Brown was convicted on 18 charges including filing false tax returns and conspiracy to commit wire fraud in relation to the non-profit organization “One Door for Education Foundation” where she and Simmons was accused of stealing a total of $800,000 from the foundation of which the majority was deposited in Brown’s personal bank account and spent on a lavish vacation.
Brown was sentenced to serve a five-year term on December 4, 2017, and was also ordered to pay restitution.
Brown pulled into the Coleman complex Monday morning where she was taken into custody by prison officials to begin her sentence.
