LAKE COUNTY – The Lake County Board of Education released a statement Tuesday evening to inform parents whether schools will be closed due to Hurricane Matthew or not.
According to the statement, the Lake County School district has been working with the Lake County Emergency Operations Team to monitor Hurricane Matthew and the effect it will have on Lake County Schools.
During times of emergency, several Lake County schools are utilized as safety shelters for families to stay in during a storm. District and County officials met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss if the schools would close for regular school operations and prepare for sheltering residents.
Another meeting is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 11:30 am to finalize those decisions. The Lake County Board of Education announced that it would provide an update after the meeting by Wednesday afternoon.
Hurricane Matthew is expected to reach the Florida coastline sometime between Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening. High wind speeds, heavy rain, and possible flooding is expected in the Central Florida area.
Residents are advised to stock up on supplies such as flashlights, batteries, non-perishable foods, water, toiletries, and clothing in preparation for the storm.
