LEESBURG – A 2-year-old boy died Tuesday morning in an accident involving a Ford Explorer and Ford Taurus in front of the Gator Harley-Davidson dealership at approximately 10:42 am.
According to the press release issued by Lt. Joe Iozzi of the Leesburg Police Department, LPD responded to the report of a crash on US Hwy 441 and Fern Drive in Leesburg. Upon arrival, officers found a silver Ford Explorer overturned blocking the southbound lanes of US Hwy 441 and a Ford Taurus blocking the inside northbound land of US Hwy 441.
The Explorer had eight occupants at the time of the crash, and the Taurus only had one.
A preliminary investigation shows that it appears the Explorer was travelling north on US Hwy 441 near Fern Drive when the collision occurred. It is still unclear on the actual events of the collision and who is at fault. During the collision, the Explorer lost control, crossed the center median, and rolled over at least once causing it to land on its roof. In that time, a 2-year-old baby was thrown from the vehicle and died as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision.
Three other occupants from the Explorer were airlifted to nearby trauma centers while the remaining occupants were transported to local hospitals by Emergency Medical Services.
Leesburg Police confirmed that contrary to some rumors on social media, only one child was killed in the incident.
The driver of the Taurus was also transported to a local hospital.
Leesburg Police has not released the names of the victims at this time pending notification of next of kin.
Due to the accident, traffic was backed up for miles most of the day.
The crash is currently under investigation and charges are pending in the investigation. Leesburg Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the collision please call the Leesburg Police Department Traffic Unit at (352)787-2121.
The condition of all the parties involved is still unknown at this time.
