Leesburg Man in Life-Threatening Condition After Shooting

LEESBURG – An 18-year-old Leesburg man is in critical condition after a shooting at the Birchwood Apartment Complex Tuesday afternoon according to Leesburg Police.

Leesburg Police received multiple 911 calls reporting sounds of gunfire. When police arrived on the scene, they found the body of a man with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. The victim, identified by witnesses as Courey Nelams, was found conscious and breathing at the entrance of the complex and immediately airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center. However, police believe the incident started at a different location closer to 1026 Birchwood Court judging by the evidence collected by investigators.

“They were both shooting and running at the same time and both were slipping and sliding on dead leaves on the ground,” stated Christina Bennett, a neighbor who witnessed the shooting, in an interview with The Daily Commercial.

Just before the shooting, Nelams posted a Facebook status that read, “I wanna fight 2:00 come on,” indicating that he may have known the shooter. The status has since been deleted.

Investigators went to Ocala Regional Medical Center to interview Nelams as soon as he was able to speak to them.

No  suspects have been named yet and investigators are still following many tips they have received. A search around the Carver Heights area ended with no results.

According to witnesses, Nelams was not a resident of the Birchwood Apartment complex where the shooting took place.
