LEESBURG – Detectives with the Leesburg Police department announced they have arrested a man in connection with the shooting that occurred Monday night near Lake Street where a suspect shot at a Leesburg Police officer during a traffic stop.
According to police reports, 24-year-old Jonathan Nadre Harris was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer as well as other charges after police interviews confirmed he was the suspect they had been looking for.
During the manhunt that followed the shooting Monday night, police recovered a cellular phone believed to be the property of the suspect, the report said.
After receiving a search warrant for the data on the phone, detectives found a photo set as the wallpaper of the phone’s screen that appeared to be a selfie of the suspect.
Using the description of the photo, officers canvased the area where the incident occurred on Wednesday and were able to locate Harris who matched the description from the photo on the phone.
Harris was held for questioning as a person of interest and interviewed by detectives.
During the interview, Harris reportedly admitted to being the one who shot at Officer Kitchen. Harris also told officers the route he took when he escaped, described the clothing he was wearing, and told the officers where to find the clothing and the gun used in the shooting.
During a check on Harris’s name, detectives discovered he had recently been released from prison after serving time for a felony offense.
Harris was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a concealed firearm without a permit, and use of a firearm while committing a felony.
Harris is still being processed through the Lake County Jail and details on his booking and bond were not yet available at the time of this report.
