GRAND ISLAND — A Michigan man was pronounced dead after a fatal accident on County Road 44 in Grand Island Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of CR 44 and Cypress Drive.
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, 65-year-old Donald Vandonkelaar was traveling eastbound on CR 44 on hist 2006 Harley Davidson.
At the same time, 44-year-old Melody Lewis was stopped on CR 44 waiting to turn into a driveway.
Troopers reported that for an unknown reason, Vandonkelaar failed to slow down and struck Lewis’s vehicle.
Vandonkelaar was thrown from his motorcycle after the impact.
He was transported to Waterman Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.
According to troopers, the crash remains under investigation and officials are awaiting the results of a blood test to determine if alcohol was involved.
