THE VILLAGES, Fla. — On Monday, October 1, a Girl Scout Group of The Villages will hold the 10th annual Pajama and Book Drive.
What started as a service project of the Girl Scout Alumnae Silver Trefoil Group of The Villages now has grown into a huge benefit to the community. Included in the roughly 6,000 homeless children these items are given to are also those that have been displaced by fire or other disasters, those that live in hotels and cars, and foster and migratory children.
The Girl Scout group partners with the Children’s Alliance for Lake and Sumter Counties and Social Services of Marion County Schools in order to distribute the items.
In 2017, the drive gathered more than 6,184 pairs of pajamas and over 4,000 books. The group has set an even higher goal for 2018.
Big red boxes will be set out at every recreation center in the Villages until December 10. They ask for new books and pajamas and will accept monetary donations.
