SUMTERVILLE, Fla. — Two emergency personnel were seriously injured Monday morning after their Sumter County EMS ambulance tried to make a U-turn, but pulled out in front of a dump truck.
The driver, Michael Mahia, 22, of Eustis, and Nicholas Fatolitis, 20, of Leesburg, both were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Charles Dean, 39, of Spring Hill, the third EMS employee, sustained minor injuries and also was taken to a hospital.
The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 301 near N.E. 13th Ave. in Sumterville, just before 10 a.m. Monday.
Sgt. Steve Gaskins, FHP spokesman, said the crew got dispatched to a call. The ambulance was driving north on 301, pulled to the shoulder of the road, activated its lights and made a U-turn – and into the path of the truck.
The truck driver, Jorge Luis Rodriquez, 40, of Orlando, sustained minor injuries and was taken to South Lake Hospital.
The report adds Mahia was cited for making an improper U-turn.
