OCALA, Fla. — Next Monday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m., the City of Ocala will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the General Aviation Terminal at the Ocala International Airport.
This event is free and open to the public and will include light refreshments for guests.
The new 17,500 square foot General Aviation Terminal will include office space for Sheltair Aviation, the airport’s fixed-base operator, Airport Administration, a large restaurant with meeting rooms, three car rental service areas, and additional office space for future tenants.
The new terminal is expected to open in December 2019, according to City staff.
“The General Aviation Terminal is the central hub of activity at the Ocala International Airport,” said Matt Grow, Ocala International Airport Director.
“The current General Aviation Terminal, constructed in 1962, has served its purpose well. However, the new terminal will make a great first impression for aviators and guests arriving at the Ocala International Airport for business or pleasure. Sheltair Aviation already provides outstanding customer service and this new state-of-the-art facility will only further enhance that experience by bringing together many of the aviation services currently spread throughout the airport property,” added Grow.
The approximate cost for this project is $6.1 million and funding for construction of the new terminal was made possible through grants received from the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration, airport funds and the City of Ocala’s partnership with Sheltair Aviation.
Ocala International Airport is owned and operated by the City of Ocala. Ocala has a five-member Airport Advisory Board appointed by the City Council with staggered terms. The purpose of the Advisory Board is to provide local community input to the airport and its staff. A full-time Director with a staff of four manages the airport.
