FLORIDA – Florida has been lucky to not have any direct hits from hurricanes in a while, but with Hurricane Matthew, we could finally be seeing major effects throughout Central Florida when Matthew makes his way along the east coast.
We have put together a list of helpful tips on how to prepare for hurricanes in Florida to make things a little less confusing and chaotic.
TIPS:
- Turn on your TV or radio in order to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
- Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit. Include a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.
- Plan how to communicate with family members if you lose power. For example, you can call, text, email or use social media. Remember that during disasters, sending text messages is usually reliable and faster than making phone calls because phone lines are often overloaded.
- Review your evacuation plan with your family. You may have to leave quickly so plan ahead.
- Keep your car in good working condition, and keep the gas tank full; stock your vehicle with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.
If Hurricane Mathew changes course and comes further inland, it is recommended that you follow the following tips:
- Know where your local shelters are if you live in a mobile home or similarly structured home.
- If you are staying in your own home, be sure to board up your windows with hurricane shutters or approved plywood. Ask you local lumber store for options.
- Find the best structurally sound spot in your home to go to if you become in the path of the hurricane.
