Two Clermont Police Officers Injured in Foot Pursuit of Carjacking Suspect

CLERMONT, Fla. — Two Clermont City Police Officers were injured during a foot pursuit of a robbery suspect after responding to a call about a possible robbery and carjacking.

The alleged suspect, David W. Cox, attempted to carjack a woman in the Publix parking lot in the area of County Road 455 and State Road 50 as she was having lunch in her car.

Police responded to the call at 11:15 a.m. Monday.

Police say the woman reportedly fought the man off as he attempted to carjack her.

As the officers approached the suspect he fled on foot running across six lanes of traffic and then into a wooded area near Toyota of Clermont.

When Cox tried to run into a wooded area, sheriff’s deputies fired a taser after he refused to stop.

Cox was charged with carjacking, battery, and resisting arrest without violence.

According to court records, Cox is also facing charges of aggravated battery for a July 2 arrest. The victim was later able to identify him.

Both officers are still recovering from their injuries but are expected to make s full recovery.

Cox was transported to the Lake County Jail where he remains in lieu of a $27,000 bond.
