THE VILLAGES – A Villages resident was pulled from a pond early Saturday morning after she ran a stop sign causing her vehicle to run off of the road and land in the middle of a small pond according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports.
The incident happened just before 2:00 am Saturday morning at the intersection of Charlotte Court and Hillsborough Trail according to troopers.
60-year-old Giovanna Fiorino told troopers she was traveling southbound on Charlotte Court toward Hillsborough Trail when she looked down at her phone for a second to check her GPS and when she looked up she had already run the stop sign at the intersection of Hillsborough Trail and Charlotte Court.
Fiorino’s 2008 Toyota Prius then left the road and traveled onto the shoulder of Hillsborough trail and continued until it came to rest at in the middle of a small pond.
FHP Trooper Billy Ortiz stated in the report that Fiorino was wearing her seat belt at the time and that there did not seem to be any indication of any alcohol or drug involvement.
Although there were no reported injuries, Fiorino’s vehicle suffered major damage estimated at $15,000 as a result of being submerged in the water.
As a result of the incident, Fiorino was issued a citation for running a stop sign.
