TAVARES\u00a0<\/b>\u2014\u00a0<\/span>The Lake County Animal Shelter is launching a new program to help\u00a0decrease the feral cat population<\/span>\u00a0countywide. \u201cOperation Community Caturday<\/span>,\u201d a partnership between the shelter and\u00a0LEASH, Inc.<\/span>, will seek to sterilize up to 600 free-roaming cats per year.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return, or TNVR<\/span>,\u00a0improves the lives of cats, addresses community concerns, reduces complaints about cats, and stops the breeding cycle, according to leading cat advocacy group, Alley Cat Allies.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

To further this cause, the shelter will sterilize and vaccinate up to 50 community cats on the last Saturday of each month.<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

\u201cTNVR is the only humane and proactive approach to reducing the outdoor cat population<\/span>,\u201d said Shelter Director Whitney Boylston. \u201cWith the support of LEASH, Inc., we are able to offer this service at a very affordable rate, making sterilization of community cats more accessible to the public.<\/span>\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Residents who are feeding outdoor cats are encouraged to\u00a0<\/span>register online for a\u00a0TNVR appointment. The cost of the surgery will be $10 per cat, paid directly to the\u00a0<\/span>shelter<\/span>\u00a0by cash or card.\u00a0Appointments are limited to\u00a0<\/span>fivecats per resident per month, and each cat must arrive at the shelte<\/span>r on\u00a0Friday between 6 and\u00a0<\/span>7 p.m.<\/span><\/span>, or Saturday between\u00a07:30 and 8:30<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0a.m. All cats must be in a\u00a0humane trap, be healthy, and be a minimum of\u00a0<\/span>four\u00a0pounds. Trapping and returning the cats is the responsibility of the caregiver and not a service provided by the shelter.<\/span>Residents are required to pick-up the cats after surgery on Saturday afternoon and return them to the location where the cat was trapped.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Operation Community Caturday is limited to unowned, free-roaming cats, and all cats will be ear<\/span>–tipped.<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n
