Residents in Michigan City and surrounding areas are spending the day in their homes as a winter storm lays a thick blanket of snow as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n
After enjoying a week of mostly clear weather, residents began stocking up on essentials Thursday afternoon in anticipation of this weekend’s winter storm expected break previous snowfall records in the region.<\/p>\n
The National Weather Service announced a Winter Storm Watch on Wednesday evening which was later escalated to a warning by Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
Local grocery stores such as Meijer were jammed with hundreds of locals attempting to stock their cupboards with milk, bread, and other necessary\u00a0essentials to ride out the storm in their home.<\/p>\n
One shopper stated they waiting in line for over an hour just to check out with every line stretching from the checkout lanes almost to the entrance.<\/p>\n
Government offices, schools, and most businesses were closed Friday after the storm covered the roads with nearly 8 inches of snow overnight making travel difficult.<\/p>\n
The accumulation of snow is expected to continue until 6:00 p.m. according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n
In some places, snow has already reach knee-level to some residents.<\/p>\n
