MICHIGAN CITY, Ind.<\/strong> — Council members approved a pay raise for Michigan City Parks Department seasonal labor and maintenance workers during Thursday’s City Council meeting which will bring workers’ pay from $7.40 an hour to $10.15 an hour.<\/p>\n

The proposed amendment\u00a0to the 2018\u00a0Salary Ordinance was first read at the council meeting held on July 3<\/a> which was met with support by all council members and attendees from the public.<\/p>\n

After the first reading of the proposed amendment, Councilman At-Large Johnny Stimley urged the council to complete the second and third reading which will normally have been done over the next two council meetings and move the proposal to a vote, however, City Council President\u00a0Don Przybylinski denied Stimley’s request stating that those instances are normally reserved for items of immediate importance.<\/p>\n

During the second reading of the proposal at the\u00a0July 17 council meeting, President Przybylinski, once again explained the importance of the pay raise for the workers.<\/p>\n

Councilman Bryant Dabney, First Ward, Councilman Gene Simmons, Sixth Ward, and Councilman At-Large Johnny Stimley once again urged the council to continue with the second and third readings of the ordinance in order to move to a vote at which time the council agreed and voted unanimously 9-0 to approve the amendment.<\/p>\n

The new ordinance will ensure that seasonal workers in the Michigan City Parks Department receive\u00a0fair pay and encourage them to return each season to continue working for the parks department which has suffered a loss in season\u00a0employees over the last few years due to higher wages in other departments.<\/p>\n

By speeding up the second and third reading, workers can see their pay raise as soon as July 29, which would otherwise have delayed the raise by at least four weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
